Romaine lettuce is fucking disgusting and I will die on this hill. “Yummm, I would like my leafy greens to be impaled through the middle by a hard plastic-like flavorless spine” said no one ever. Butter lettuce (also bibb and boston), good. Baby spinach, good. Mixed greens, good as long as not slimy like you said. Hell…

Outside of an occasional Caesar Salad, Romaine sucks. Butter lettuce is always the better choice for a simple salad.
