Part of the irritation with the change is that Wheel of Time *isnt* actually a particularly non-diverse setting. It has a decent amount of diversity, just not in the backwater village a few of the initial main characters come from.

Not in the medieval-ish culture that the books, you can’t. Or at least not without a convoluted explanation that contravenes the original purpose.
