I think sports are the most consistently well done genre in anime, especially anything animated by Studio I.G..

Vandal Hearts is how I got into the genre. It’s pretty basic (but awesome) so you shouldn’t feel overwhelmed. Shining Force 2 is another good one to ease into the genre. 

I really want to say that you should give Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions a shot but there’s a big caveat: it’s only available on mobile (or PSP). If you can stomach the control scheme, it’s amazing.

There’s also Fire Emblem. Three Houses is excellent if you have a switch but you also can’t go that wrong with…
