i get what you're saying, but to people of a certain age (i.e. like me—41—and a bit older or younger), u2 is in the pantheon of "college rock/new wave/postpunk/new music/alternative" artists, along with the cure, dm, rem, the smiths, the clash, the ramones, and maybe a few others). despite how they evolved or mellowed

TI0L2L is a fucking great record. i think that one and colour and the shape are neck and neck (and in your honour a slightly distant third)..but yeah, the 3rd record is less bombastic, though no less catchy or emotional. love live-in skin, aurora, mia, etc..

it was pretty great in the early aughts when the brit press started calling starsailor "warmplay."

yep. all the dna of the cure, the bunnymen, u2, radiohead, floyd, gabriel, etc..with way too little of the soul or sex or danger or balls.

1. rush
2. viva
3. parachutes
4. mylo
5. x/y

fuck arcade fire.

wow. i think it's easily the dullest song on the record, though mysterious ways is cheesier and more crassly commercial.

i think kyle-dude is just saying, fairly, that you can love the rock and hate the disco and still be a bleeding-heart, brown-skinned-twink-defending commie. i'm an example.

is he really?

i don't think grohl was necessarily grousing about wanting everything to be rock and roll so much as wanting popular music to sound like it was created from a place of warm-blooded soul again..especially because not long after that screed he delivered, the foos did a collabo with deadmau5 on a pretty fucking tasty

Unrotatable Tire?

i agree—and, yet, i understand the upset about it. because even though when we would use it that way, it did not mean we were equating "gay" with "loser" in a hateful way, we were still equating "gay" with "loser." like "if you deviate from what's cool and normal", i.e. being attracted to other dudes or liking crappy

i'm pretty sure tommy lee is at least as fictional as jeff spicoli.

he's not really a member, and if he is it's been 2 weeks, and the smashing pumpkins are the greatest rock and roll band in history.

christ, how (not-)old are you people?!

no.

i loved them so much on the heels of bends and ok computer.

i'm as liberal as they come but this argument is spurious. by that logic, all gays/blacks/latinos/asians/women/etc who like dance music/pop/electronica/techno and look at rock music as loud, annoying, macho noise actually hate white people and especially white males.

why would you have "no idea what disco is"? for a few years in the late-70s/early-80s there were probably 50 significantly big hit songs that were disco, disco-funk or disco-pop (bee gees, donna summer, diana ross, barry white, chic, gloria gaynor, kc and the sunshine band, wild cherry, kool & the gang, commodores,

most of the post-punk that drew heavily on disco is the ironic/pretentious/distant side of it that doesn't move me in any way (e.g. talking heads, new order, gang of four, later-period clash, blondie, etc). post-punk with soul, for me anyway, is the cure, psych furs, bunnymen, banshees, joy division, peter murphy,
