Its a pokemon game. Its only natural that they'll remove most of the cool new features in the next game. Its what they have always done.

Pokemon usually has an option to select the kind of trainer you are (Ace Trainer, Lass, Youngster, etc), and it shows you as that character model during things like union rooms. That's probably what we're seeing here, not improved customization.
