Thanks! Yeah I wasn't a huge fan of Mario prior to 64.. I understand what 3 and SMW meant to the genre and gaming as a whole but it was Land and Land 2 that I couldn't get enough of. I loved the level themes and submarine and space craft inclusion. The Zones in SML 2 were even more interesting and the rabbit power up

Such a delightfully weird and beautiful game that left a profound impact on my 14 year old mind.

Wikipedia classifies Gunstar Heroes as a run and gun though.. Seeing Gunstar Heroes on a top platform game list is no less weird than seeing Metal Slug or Ikari Warriors on a similar list.

You can dispute someone’s taste but you can’t argue whether something is a favorite of theirs or not... Also you're wrong about Vectorman lol

agree with the first statement... Gunstar Heroes and Smash Bros aren’t platform games.. but they never said “best.” They said their top 3... no need for quotes anytime someone says "my favorite..." can't dispute someone else's taste lol.

This is impossible for me lol... I’ll just throw out some of my favorites.. Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Mario Land 2, Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, Mario 3D World, Ristar, Nights into Dreams, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, DK Country, Castlevania Bloodlines, Rondo of Blood, Mischief Makers,

I remember seeing it, House of the Dead and Burning Rangers brand new for $40 each at EB back when I was in high school.... I thought “I’ll get them one day.”

Just checking to make sure that 3 is in its rightful place... carry on

Great piece. Although my gaming experiences in the late 80s and early 90s were pretty vanilla for me growing up, I was definitely reminded of some of my experiences in the mid to late 90s. I have two older cousins that had a pro action replay cart and would import Saturn games. When the Dreamcast launched in Japan,

I mean its 10 of 36 games and a couple of them never made it to any console.

Sega’s arcade business didn’t doom them, the combination of the 32X, Saturn’s US launch, and lack of a true Sonic game on the Saturn did them in.

I am.. I def stan for my guy lol

How about the reigning rookie of the year that was even in the MVP convo earlier in the season..

Luka?

Reminds me of this gem.. I loved these games more than Live, 2K or any of the others (Courtside, NBA Shootout and whatever Konami was putting out) at the time.

Probably because it was originally supposed to be a Dragon Ball game and Dragon Ball is based on Journey to the West.

I didn’t play Alex Kidd until years after his time.... immediately thought it (Miracle World) was way better than NES Mario.

Agree... I love the sprite work of this but not the art style. Would’ve been awesome if they tried to make it look just like the box art.

Yep, that’s it.

I disagree.. I like pixels over “smooth” sprites. Something about the charm of sprites disappears when they’re HD.
