You squeeze that exposed bit between your thumb and index finger and pull the slider up until the handle comes loose. And then, you don't let it happen again!

It's not pretty, but to solve this kind of problem, you can cut out a few of the teeth at the bottom to thread the slider back on the other side (I'd probably take out 2 or 3 teeth about 1 inch up to make it easier).
