I think it's because the characters all seem like decent people. Kate is a good mother who doesn't cave to social pressures. Ben is self-confident and a caring brother and uncle. Tommy is intelligent and loyal. Even BJ's unapologetically immoral behavior isn't portrayed as a flaw.

It made me curious, I thought the cauldron was supposed to be visible both inside and outside the stadium—which is why it's usually placed on the rim and why Vancouver had to have a second cauldron outside the domed stadium. Did they change that rule?

Totally agreed. I don't remember a single moment that wasn't funny or happy, and if a comedy can be one of those two things for 22 solid minutes it's done its job.
