So because it happens less often we shouldn't care?

Apparently it's around 8%, same as for false allegations of any other crime. So, a minirity, for sure, but not exceedingly rare either.

Good for you. You also don't get to set the terms for other people's friendships and what they will and won't let their friends joke about.

It also presumes that trans people only want to write about trans characters. gender doesn't define what type of stories you want to tell. women writers don't just write about women - zadie smith can tell a story from the point of view of an old man and it's just as real than if a man had written it.

No, I get what you mean. And yes, I think you do need a certain amount of arrogance to be good at anything - writing included. I guess I just saw your post as implying that cis writers telling the stories of trans people was not only arrogant, but that you were also saying that they couldn't do it well, and that's

Someone tie this woman's tubes, stat.

Writers have been telling stories about characters that are very different from them forever. Does this mean you think that every writer that doesn't only write about things they have personally lived through is arrogant?

I agree with you and I wish people would stop defending stupid shit women do in the name of feminism. I'm a woman and I find some women's obsession with weddings downright ridiculous.

Jodi Picoult sucks just as badly as Nicholas Sparks but it's not like anyone respects Sparks either. Everyone I know thinks he's a cheesy hack, much like Miss Picoult. This has nothing to do with gender. Picoult writes the book equivalent of cheesy rom-coms: lowest level denominator, cheesy, formulaic pap.

Exactly. Nothing will ever undo the harm that was done to a victim or bring back a murdered loved one. My opinion isn't based on disregard for victims but on the fact that what's done can't be undone, and the justice system and sentencing needs to be based on the interests of the general population and on

I want prison sentences decided on what's good for the general population, not the victims or their families. Sounds harsh, but think about it: prison is meant to punish and rehabilitate, and the idea is to protect the general population. It's not about "restitution" or satisfying the victims, it's about doing what's

Longer sentences don't mean jack shit if prisons aren't actually good about rehabilitating prisoners. Europe and Canada have very light sentences compared to the US, and much smaller prison populations (proportionately), and much "nicer" prisons, and yet recidivism rates are way lower. So harsher sentences aren't

She is and this whole story is awful. However it should be illegal to name your child something as stupid and fucking ridiculous as a backwards name. I've also seen Nevaeh as a name and it kind of makes me rethink my stance on forced sterilizations.

I agree with the sentiment but you can't base a trial - whether it's a real trial or a college hearing - on just one person's word against another. You need some kind of corroborating evidence, and that guy's testimony counts. You can't say that a woman's voice counts more than a man's if she says she was raped

d

Yeah, that's my sense as well - that women and men probably get depressed in equal proportions but symptoms might be different or men are taught to ignore their feelings and put up a brave front, etc... Though I'm not a psychologist so I have no idea if that's true or if women really do suffer from depression more

I was just gonna say, women in general are diagnosed with depression more than men, so it would make sense this would also apply in different professions and levels of authority.

It's horrible but I think a lot of people forget or don't want to think about the fact that paedophiles don't develop their attraction to little kids once they're adults, most of them are already into children as older children and teenagers and some of them (but not all) have themselves been victims of abuse.

THIS. But every time I point out this contradiction I get insulted and accused of being a paedophilia or rape apologist. You can't have it both ways but people want to act like if a teenager is a victim, they're a "little girl" or "little boy", but if they're the ones committing a crime, then all of a sudden their age

I think it's a stupid reason and in any case she should have had a parent write her a note excusing her from getting in the pool that day for whatever reason (probably best not to mention the hair though) and that should have been the end of it. No matter how stupid I think the girl's excuse is, it doesn't in any way
