Effectively? Yes. You’re not supposed to question, object, or critique. Go back to mindless consumption of product. It’s the American Way (TM)!

I always want to know, if being woke is bad, what should we be? Asleep?

I think that’s what felt the most uncomfortable about The Closer, his lack of self-introspection, empathy, and actualization. Chappell made some valid arguments but they felt hollow as the presentation was more “some dude bragging about how rich he is” coupled with “old man yells at clouds”. This is partly why his

Gadsby achieves what Pryor did in terms of opening herself up in achingly personal ways that are as painful as they are hilarious.

I remember seeing another comedian (a huge name who I can’t remember) do a bit in his set about one of his kids coming out. It was hilarious and touching because it dealt with how the world had changed and he felt out of touch, but ultimately landed on empathy and trying to understand.

I think you’ve hit the nail right on the head, and the fact that Chappelle doesn’t think Hannah Gadsby isn’t funny makes it all the more clear that there isn’t really anything left for him to say as a relevant comic.

Honestly, I see all the complaining about “wokeness” as childish outrage from grown men/women that can’t accept a world where their “jokes” are not accepted.

God I loathe this piece of shit. He hides behind his moderate dem title but is bought and paid for and almost as transparent at Sinema. Got to hand it to him, he is almost as slimy as McConnell but at least the turtle is simply truthful in his allegiances and would probably admit to being evil.

Yes, he’s terrible, but he’s also just another rotating villain that the Democrats use as cover for doing nothing. There are probably at least 5-6 other senators that would vote against the Biden agenda as well, but it’s more politically convenient for them to concentrate fire on a couple unpopular reps. Bottom line:

The solution to passing better legislation is not to pile on Joe Manchin, which might be fun but actually helps him politically. The solution is to win 52 or more senate seats instead of the bare minimum of 50 so you can pass a bigger bill and free Joe to pander to his constituents by voting against it.

They actually asked me about all of those movies. I got tired of vetting them so I just approve everything now.

Who asked for The Lighthouse? Who asked for Halloween? Who asked for Citizen Kane? Who asked for The Mask? Why do they need to fucking ask anyone?

It’s just a story about a spaceman. It might be good, might be bad, but I promise it won’t hurt you any more or less than if they had named him “Scuzz Brightyear”.

I like a connected universe just as much as the next guy, but c'mon. Everyone quit acting like your mental health has been shattered because there's a standalone space movie.

It’s not complicated, the movie isn’t what the toy is based on, it’s the gritty reboot of the thing the toy is based on.

I think you hit on something insanely important: Adapt or die. Comedians like Chappelle and Seinfeld seem stuck in a bygone era of comedy to me. When I think about the comedy that has stood out to me in the past ten years or so, it is often the more layered and meaty stuff that stands out (and is in direct opposition

None of the Netflix employees’ demands were about taking his special down or meeting with him. Dave just wants to feel important.

I continue to be amazed at the inability of men in general, and male comedians in particular, to fathom that maybe, just maybe, they might not be the intended audience for a performance. Their whole lives, every piece of media they’ve consumed has been targeted at them by media producers catering to their desires, so

Agreed that third act drops off, but the ending is a gut punch. Despite flaws First Avenger told a simple focused story that paid off with a great character arc. Whereas IW was a bunch of scenes of differing quality.

I am SO GODDAMN OUTRAGED that I basically agree with most of this and don’t have a chance to write a sarcastic spittle-flecked list of all my problems with it.
