All the comedy on the show was tell, don't show. Sorkin clearly can't write comedy and apparently couldn't find anyone to punch up the comedy for him.

The show-within-the-show wasn't funny at all. The author avatar was pretty much a Marty Stu with substance problems. The show was kind of in love with itself. The Straw woman "Republican" would have been called a RINO even back then.

Also, the comedy wasn't funny at all. So you have the show within a show that people act like it's this comedy institution, but the bits depicted onscreen were awful to mediocre.

It's actually fairly reflective of issues with the show and how in love with itself it was. It actually wasn't a bad show. But it rated itself a 9, when it was a 6.5, maybe a 7 on a good day.

They saved Maeve's storyline by explaining why she was able to get away with stuff that seemed implausible; someone with very high level access was pulling the strings.

Big chunks of it were definitely pulled from an unused idea folder, not unlike the Netflix season of Arrested Development. The ideas aren't necessarily bad individually, but the narrative overall can suffer.
