Yes, that’s definitely true, but I might argue that it is gritty in relative terms when you consider that the most known versions are West’s, Burton’s, and Schumacher’s. I think most of the people tauting the grittiness weren’t the biggest Batman readers.

I was thoroughly impressed by the action sequences in the sequel. The helicopter chase and the train rescue were great.
