Your version is much, MUCH better, although it still is problematic in combination with "nine months later". Change those three words to "When it comes time for the birth", in combination with your change, and it's great:

It's muddled, incoherent writing on an otherwise well-written show that made me not follow. They clearly should have gone with:
To the contrary, I think it's the explanations I'm reading here that involve overthinking (overly generous explaining). It's not like I initially got what they were going for, then paused the show to think for a while, and then decided it must be something else.
I'm just speaking the honest truth as I know it. And again: this is one of my favorite shows on TV, and this is the only misstep I've seen them make with it.
Is that an actual expletive people use IRL? I only previously knew it as Phil/Tandy's go-to on "Last Man on Earth".
Yes, "nine months later" is a figure of speech. To talk about tying SEXUAL INTERCOURSE to a live baby. Not one anyone would ever use to talk about connecting learning the sex (and apparently race?!?) of a baby mid-pregnancy, via ultrasound, to that baby's birth. Not anyone who actually is personally connected to…
Maybe some people who haven't actually had kids could get that from the story? I don't know. I've had four kids, and no parent I know would ever explain things that way—not remotely.
It seemed pretty clear something was going to go wrong. But having him just flat out die seemed pretty extreme (and still does), so I wasn't sure.
He did sound impressively philosophical and wise (after seconds earlier sounding like a dumbass with the claim of being a temp at a "statisticiary"): "Yeah, it's a longshot. But we're fresh out of shortshots. Look, this is gonna be scary whenever you decide to do it. But you gotta take that leap one day. Why not…
Yeah, that was really harsh.
I've seen several people, both here and on other forums, tie themselves in knots to explain this away. But I continue to believe that it's bad writing, to think that people would get all that from:
But how would they find out it's a girl NINE months before the birth? And a "Native girl", at that?
I like your curiosity on this point. They also need to explain what the fuck they were talking about in the Kerry/Cary origin story:
All right, I will.
Oof, I didn't think about that possibility. But I just don't think they'd let Gail go out that way. We'll see…
What constitutes the "initial run"? I think the only episodes I've seen are Bradley Cooper, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton.
I was mesmerized by this film.
I have a reasonably high tolerance for deadpan/awkward/cringe comedy. I mean, I loved the British "Office". But the kind of thing Galifinakis does both on "Between the Ferns" and "Baskets"…no. Too far. It doesn't make me laugh, it just irritates and bores me. Sorry!
There ya go! Probably the best suggestion yet. But instead, they went with "Show me the money". Oy.
Is it racist that I keep thinking Sam is played by Donald Glover? It's not like I'm confusing him with ALL black people—just one specific black person.
