This is why I like Head First books. I've heard people call them informal, shallow, and (the illustrations) distracting. Heck they even use the much-hated Comic Sans. But I find that the experience of reading HF books drives the point home.

I follow a similar system but I use a clear sheet of paper instead of the front of the book. This doubles as a bookmark which I leave in the book after I've read it. From what I have so far, I can see that my system works better for me since, if the book is really good, there's a lot of it I would like to note.

My experience with Android development is that the mere resources (time and computing power) needed to run the emulator is way too much.
