for what its worth my wrx’s 2.0L dit is a 10.6:1, just a touch higher.  granted probably explains why it makes slightly more power too (well bigger turbo maybe as well).

They could be, if shift points were a thing that you could turn off. Like let the CVT do CVT things. Making it behave like an automatic just hurts the whole point of one.

Mostly it was because they were cheaper to buy and more fuel efficient. Now its the same cost wise if not more due to the rarity of them, and automatics are just as efficient now as getting a manual would be.
