It’s one thing to name a car with four non-wording letters and a hyphen. Not smooth, not yet offense either. But adding “HPE750" just makes this a huge target for ridicule. That’s a seven letter, one hyphen, one blank space, three number acronym, dammit!

It is always quite amazing to see how superficial these ads are. Why even mention the blacked out trim? D’oh. “The European driving experience” is a trauma that Cadillac for one is still hunted by.

If there was a better car in 1978? Sure!

Wow, that’s a motorised raft, basically!

Smugway - always ready to show you how it’s done.

I appreciate the specificity of your number, but isn’t the basic idea safety and prevention to take care of the anormal? You don’t use lifeboats more often than in, say, 1 of 50000 crossings either - but nobody suggests to save the expense.

The Os-Halhjem-ferry above takes just as much time for its crossing. Anyway, I don’t see why a longer distance ferry is supposed to have a worse design?

Who designed this ferry? It’s build to destroy cars. Here’s how a car ferry is supposed to look like:

What an extremely utilitarian cockpit! Thanks for sharing!

I can easily agree on the basic principle (indeed, my favourite Jan Wilsgaard quote below works along the same lines), but is it really that much more complicated? A stalk is a simple solution, but push buttons aren’t bad either.

Unreliable or just impractical? It was a time with optimism, good for new ideas. Not everything can work out.

Oh, these are gorgeous cars...this ‘57 just popped up on BaT. Note the transmission:

Haha, of course, but an academic’s approach to the issue doesn’t really help anyone though. I hope you get that point, too.

Makes a lot of sense! It also seems like they did evolve the concept, and understand the added speed, quite quickly after that short period of murderdromes.

Why the wood planks? Was it cheaper than concrete or tarmac? Strange choice.

Seriously? I was born with a GDR passport, unfortunately.

The older I get, the more tired I am of the whole concept of doing-what-others-expect-of-you. It’s just annoying. Why not just drive what you want, given the product is reasonably well thought out and functioning? (GM and FCA executives shuffle with their feet)

Same is true for cars - I saw an old lady in here 70s pull out right in front of a semi truck last week. The truck actually scissored a fair bit, and even though I was nr 3 behind it, I had to brake very hard myself. Luck was with everyone involved - the sun-blinded granny, the truck driver who didn’t touch any

Excellent post, but the “don’t cost in neutral”-laws....strange. As if we were talking about some communist land. I do that a fair deal, because costing in gear will reduce speed on hills not steep enough to keep the vehicle rolling at a constant pace.
