This isn’t a zipper maneuver. Zipper is when you’re in a lane that’s disappearing. You should keep your lane until it fully disappears and merge into the other line at that point.

It doesn’t help that the grade crossing typically don’t contemplate pedestrians. Plus railroads are generally jerks about everything not related to the actual train. An example in my neighborhood the railroad updated an old crossing. And placed the stop sign on the wrong side of the crosswalk for the walking/bike…

Life moves fast in the Northeastern U.S., particularly the NYC metro area. Not sure if there is a federal standard for crossing gate timing, but if the railroad and/or local government have any discretion with the timing, it’s probably kept to a minimum given the amount of traffic and frequency of trains in the area.
