Whether or not the "take turns" sign is the right answer, the endless efforts to make travel inefficient in road design in America is brutal. The combination of endless stop signs and speed bumps makes my neighborhood and so many others slow and wasteful to navigate.

@lilwillie: This is OK in communities where stop sign use is mostly to prevent car accidents.

@orbit: The roundabout, properly used, is better than the four way stop. Imagine not having to stop every 100 feet as you cross a suburb. Brilliant!

They could refresh it, tweak a few things, and still make money. Perhaps they fear still selling it brings their brand image down or steals sales from the Transit Connect or F-150.

The thing about the Model T is that it was dirt simple and cheap. I don't think the full size pickup or van compares, I'm not even sure the Ford Ranger compares, although crank windows help the case.

@mocanlagunas: Our domestic car market certainly lags behind the european car market.

I want! I saw one at the car show here today and it looked really sharp, great fit and finish.

Best car? The car you have. A bird in the hand...

@maximum_sarge: I was waiting for someone to suggest that! It's flip-n-fuck seating with a wipe down interior! Factory tint on the windows! If you need room for more than 3, just take out the rear seats entirely.

@SlowMo: And you can ride almost anywhere, and you don't take up any space, cause any damage, use any gasoline, or cause any traffic jams (hopefully!)

And for some bizarre reason, of the modes of transport on this map, we have chosen to heavily subsidize the roads (and thus the SUV), and the airplane. With road taxes only picking up ~40% of the road building and maintaining costs, the cost of that fuel is artificially low, largely courtesy our income taxes.

@stoke 2.0: And NY, and LA, and DC, and Seattle, and SF, and Houston, and Dallas, and Atlanta, etc, etc.

@OA 5599: 45 minute commute by car, each way? Kill me please. Bike or car, that's no way to spend 8 hours every week, just to get to a shit job.

@Turboner: The Miata engine is built for flogging, keep the revs going.

Factoring insurance, gas, maintenance, the purchase price, I like the 1989-1994 Mazda Protege/323. And among those, the 1.8L B-series (Miata engine) based Protege with the 5 speed is a champ. I should know, it's my $1700 daily driver.

@Turboner: I have a 94 LX w/146k miles. Runs like a top! I hope to get 300k+ out of it.

@Six2: I should add, in the financapocalypse if you want something sexy and fast, get a motorcycle. Go fast for cheap and get good gas mileage.

I'm boring, but I tell people to buy fuel efficient, affordable, reliable cars. Gas prices will return to the previous high level and beyond, and the musical chairs of car ownership will end with gas guzzlers devalued and hideously expensive to run. Hybrids aren't affordable enough.

Used cars that don't do well in the Consumer Reports buyers guide. Modified Hondas, and their ilk. Cars people are ill equipped to reasonably maintain themselves. Cars people can't afford to fuel/insure/maintain.
