Well, the things Bernie actually said and did have never really mattered all that much to people who wanted to smear him and his supporters, who represent a pretty loud minority of liberals.

Well, as to that all I can say is that I hope so. I expect that’s the case and she didn’t realize that there are people out there who would see it another way (not that she’s necessarily obligated to be aware of that before making the joke). Either way I found it crossed a line for me after what I saw last weekend. If…
I mean of course that’s where I think the original intent of the email dig. Maybe I’m too wrapped up in Twitter, but it seems to me that just as often its been used against people on the left who didn’t vote for Hillary or voted for a third party (I did vote for her, for the record, but since the election I’ve made no…
It is a bit odd that people seem so uppity about Tina Fey in particular seeing as this isn’t the first time she’s been accused of making some fairly tasteless jokes. I’ve always liked her a lot, but I don’t think she was anyone’s woke bae you know?
It is entirely possible that it is just too subtle for me. I’m not going to sit here and pretend I’m smarter than Tina Fey.
Fair enough. I’m not one of these people who wants to lump Tina Fey in the with alt right just because she said some slightly tone deaf things in the course of making a joke, I just didn’t find the bit very funny and I’m seeing a lot of back and forth about it is all.
I have to admit I missed that line, so maybe that’s the signal I was looking for. But yeah, it just seems to kind of fold back in on itself at times, going on the one hand from her talking about how she hopes they come to New York City and get beat up back to a seemingly legitimate belief that ignoring them will take…
Okay, fine, I’m just trying to get a sense of why some people see satire here and others don’t.
Where?
I just meant in the sense that she basically believes that ignoring them will work.
That’s not even remotely true. Jewish war veterans used to line the streets with baseball bats when George Lincoln Rockwell came to town
No.
It does. I just don’t see anything that indicates to me that she doesn’t mean what she says. Obviously she doesn’t mean we should all just eat cake, but I think she’s sincere in her belief that ignoring them will work.
Jokes aren’t automatically satire. They can be sincere
I took it fairly literally. She thinks the best thing to do is let them have their say, but don’t pay attention to them while they do it. I just happen to think that’s a fallacy because everything they do is designed to incite a reaction and it will always be successful at some level.
As in you’re meant to do the opposite of what she’s saying? I suppose that’s as likely as anything, but if that’s the case I must have missed a wink or a signal in there somewhere.
I see a lot of people who didn’t but like this being told that they missed the point. I interpreted it much as the article here does and I’d love for someone to explain an alternate interpretation.
They phrased it poorly, probably intentionally to get attention. It IS okay to punch Nazis, but it’s also okay to try and rehabilitate them. It doesn’t have to be some kind of life sentence.
It’s not like they’re wearing brightly colored helmets or anything
This is sorta where I am too. If he’s served his time and remains in good standing I don’t think anyone can or should stop him from playing, as wrong as that feels to say. It’s not as though it’s an accusation that went unpunished.
