You're not doing the size of the gamble enough justice. AMC had a well-worked business model involving commonality of parts between models (even including body panels), allowing them to 'do a lot with a little'. They'd been doing it for decades, with reasonably good results.

However, if you look at the way that the light shines off of the paint - especially in the reflection, you will notice that the finish is not smooth. It has a non-uniform pocky/wavy texture. The industry refers to that as texture

That appears to be quite a bit of orange peel for a new car. I've heard this before about some of the new BMW's coming out of the factory with a poor paint job, in need of quite of sanding work to look right. This appears to be an example of paint quality that's lower than I'd expect from BMW.
