A rev limiter cannot save an engine that has been overrevved by the wheels/trans twisting the crank faster than the rev limit. A rev limiter can only pull out spark to prevent the engine twisting itself (via sparking) faster than its limit. So you hurt it.

VWs are the quintessential wheelie monster. Here's one wheelying so hard it scrapes the apron TWICE, comes down out of shape, and STILL runs a 10.8. I'm not sure he so much as breathed off the gas.
