I can't watch the original cut of Aliens, the director's cut was the first I ever saw (the one usually shown on TV in the UK) and watching the original cut just feels wrong - the scene with the automated machine guns is a great setpiece and I don't like seeing it cut/shortened.

Yeah that's true, there was a lot of general references so it didn't seem like a desperate attempt to seem hip. I still cringe when I think of the first scene in the Simpsons where they mentioned twitter *shudder*

I love these dated references even if they were before my time, because they just add a fun flavor of authenticity to the whole thing - this was back when only the occasional real life reference was needed unlike the episodes of the last 10 years which are full of crappy pop-culture refereces for no r eason.
