California doesn’t have a right to do this the federal government gives them a waiver i.e gives them permission to have their own standard. The Lawsuit is over the government not renewing the waiver.

I don’t understand why this is such a big deal for the automakers. If the automakers don’t want to, they don’t have to make their cars more polluting. Fuel economy rules are minimums. If automakers are adamant about higher fuel economy all they have to do is produce cars with higher fuel economy.
