Ho.ly crap all the racism in these comments.
Ho.ly crap all the racism in these comments.
I'm sorry that the commenters here tend to be so oblivious or malicious when it comes to race. This site gets some things right, but other things horribly, horribly wrong.
I think the main issue stems from the fact that the French, Italian, British, and Japanese are not currently as ostracized or prosecuted as the Romani are, even now. It's very much akin to, say, painting yourself up as a Japanese Geisha, and then wearing a Chinese Hanfu, and claiming to be having a Japanese themed…
Your comparison is idiotic. Was Marie Antoinette oppressed in the same level that the Romani people have been for years? And of course trying to be respectful of other cultures is being too PC. All you need is accusations of the race card being played and a chorus of 'what about white people?!' and you will have…
Congrats? You aren't a gypsy as far as I have read, so it's another example of someone who is NOT that race/ethnicity/life circumstances/etc. getting pissed on behalf of the group who may or may not give a shit. It's appropriating outrage (and baiting page views, let's be realistic here).
I think the difference is when a "culture" is oppressed and often caricatured, so it feels like yet another kick. I guess a high school analogy would be making fun of the most popular kid vs. making fun of an already bullied kid. Even if both things are wrong, their impact would be completely different.
Really? You saw that happen? Because that's sort of like saying you were at the party where the dude got drunk and woke up in a tub of ice to find his kidney missing. The "baby-throwing gypsy" is one of the most common urban legends about traveling to Southern Europe.
Exactly the point. The person saying it's just like dressing up as Marie-Antoinette is sooooo misguided.
Oh geez. I've loved the show since I was about 11, but rewatching it now makes me cringe so much. The sexism and racism on the show are so matter-of-fact, it makes me uncomfortable.
I couldn't have said it better myself; This dynamic is similar to how the south is considered the most racially insensitive region in America. This isn't a mainly Southern centric issue, it is an American issue, Prejudice in all it's forms exist everywhere.
This is the image that always comes to mind when I hear of racists throwing bananas. In the 70s-80s the first wave of Black British footballers were playing in England, for the national team and some people did not like it. I'm glad we're a few years ahead of Italy in getting our first cabinet ministers from ethnic…
This reminds me of the peanuts thrown at african-american journalists at the Republican National Convention.
I can't wait to see the comments proclaiming that USA is great or better on race relation because throwing bananas is not in our covert/overt racial utility belt.
"The only major religion in India that treats menstruating women differently is Islam."
Fortunately, nearly every single comment on the previous article as well as the majority of comments on that one are from Jewish people, including other members of families with Holocaust survivors, who think she is absolutely abhorrent. Even the executive director of the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust came out…
I went and skimmed the comments on that one and someone there linked to another terrible thing she did. She dressed as Anne Frank for Halloween. That post isn't even an exposé calling her out on how fucked up that is, it's a post she wrote herself a full year after the fact that explains the qualities she shares with…
I had the gut instinct that these were villains masquerading as victims who, solely by virtue of surviving (very likely by any means necessary), felt that they had earned the right to be heroes, their basic, animal self-interest dressed up with glorified phrases like “triumph of the human spirit.”
Honestly, I missed this particular fuckshit Jezebel pulled when it first happened Love that bullshit ass "sorry not sorry" update on the decision to show the images. I'm still pissed that they banned Miz Jenkins when Tavi Gevinson wrote that article and thought she was being cute when she couldn't bother and look up…
While we're bringing up terrible things they did, let's not forget that they're the only English language outlet I know of that published the name of the victim in that high-profile gangrape case from India and didn't subsequently remove it or apologize when it became clear the decision to publish her name in the…
So a entertainment accumulator website did a posting 6 years ago about another websites stupid promotion and Jezebel is now covering it? I would say slow news day, but as it's been 6 YEARS my real guess is Katie is still upset that BuzzFeed never hired her.
