Besides not understanding what a “welfare state” is, you’re also looking at the wrong statistics. Red states have a much higher rate of SNAP enrollment per capita, which is a more useful stat than total numbers. Why? Because CA has a humongous population so of course it is more likely to have more total people in…

A welfare state is the concept that the state is unable to sustain itself and constantly needs government assistance to remain afloat. CA has a surplus and therefore cannot be counted, likewise Texas and I think all of those other states.

I think it would have been awesome to sign the bill but we aren’t living in a fantasy world where money just grows on trees. He did the responsible thing and vetoed the bill.

The thing that really encapsulates it for me is the argument you hear from companies about various actions taken by others resulting in “lost sales” - as if they somehow can argue that an event which hadn’t yet taken place was an incontrovertible inevitability, and then cry foul when it doesn’t materialize.
