That's not true! Up until the cell saga I think it was really good. There were so many interesting things happening, plot twists, and character's arcs (Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo). Anyway, agreed to disagree, I still think it's a nice story and, yes, many many fights which I love. 

That is, indeed, a good assessment of what occurred. 

Turning about 13 pages of comics a week (published in an anthology with hundreds of pages) into 25 minutes of TV every week really did a number on the pacing.
