Film did not play fair with the audience and broke several cardinal rules of honest film making and does a great job of covering up its serious plot holes.

Still the best version of the Dumas stories. Richard Lester nailed it with the casting and Lee was a crucial part of that excellent cast.

I tend to agree with your take here (for real) but I think the ultimate subversion of the genre would be for the Red God to be real, sort of a Lucifer type, that fully approves the path Stannis is on and that rewards him fully.
