You’re totally right. From a young age (3) I was the main caretaker for my brother. I had 15 looonnng years to grow up. I had a strong sense of independence and felt I was an alien in my home. This helped me be alone. Thank you for your support! I’m old now but my teenage self feels your hug :)

I learnt to forge signatures. I had a high school councillor that went to bat for me when teachers would fight me for a “parents” signature. Trust me when I tell you that although it was obvious I was on my own, some adults titillated themselves but putting obstacles in my way.
Good for you! I know the struggle. “Where are you going for Christmas/Thanksgiving” etc etc is really hard to answer when you are emancipated early. All good now.
Yeah, I’m amazed at the decisions made by young people with that quiet confidence that comes with a safety net. I am permanently risk-adverse and anxious from needing to be on my fucking toes at all times!
Am I the only one who did leave the house at 15 and was ready? I came from a violent, poor and abusive home. I left and never looked back. Welfare cut me a cheque and I did my best. There is nothing more sobering than having zero safety net.
It must have changed. In the 90's, I was also given a bunch of birth control pills (cut out of a 28 day pack) from a clinic when I requested “the morning after pill”.

Vancouver resident here - we have comparable real estate issues. Expensive real estate doesn’t excuse being desensitized to children living on the streets. AirBnB is damaging to many cities and I don’t book with them and also encourage others to skip that service.
Heart-warming would be a story about providing housing and stability for children living in poverty. The sheer numbers of children (let alone adults) living homeless in the US is a hard thing to celebrate. This is not necessary in a ‘first’ world country.

I’m so sorry to hear that. My sister was diagnosed autistic and was taken (thankfully) into government care at the age of 6, still in diapers, unable to use any utensils or speak. These are hard things to overcome witnessing.
