My guess: Miller paints it as ESPN management vs. Bill Simmons, with the Grantland staff as loyal supporters of Bill, while Holly is saying the staff is a third and separate camp that just wanted to continue to do good work, with or without Bill. They’re the ones who lost the most in all this.

This has been tried. The problem is is that it’s so competitive that new games and services come along rapidly, that the cost to cover for these systems isn’t being sustained by enough players that use them. The retention of most free to play games isn’t very high.
