I'm with ya. I must have been in 7th or 8th grade when it came out. How I was able to watch that show every week with very strict parents is totally beyond me. I would go to bed after an episode, with my mind 'sploded'.

As they have updated it to show actual texture sheets, you can see that specular highlights are indeed baked/painted into the actual diffuse textures, so the OP's belief that they have added specular shading is probably not correct. …

I'm not convinced they added anything new, except for better textures. Possibly more realistic lighting baked in, using some sort of render engine.
