I'm almost completely positive that #9 was answered by the creators post-cancellation. They came out and talked about where they were going to take the show and I remember that it was all about his son somehow. But I'm almost positive that #9 did get answered

Hmm, from what I remember the religious conflict doesn't show up until the second book. The first book talks about a war on the horizon and people are picking sides, but it isn't until #2 that they actually make the reveal that its God they're going to war with.
