Witcher 3 used the same type of approach quite successfully. There simply was too much dialogue, cutscenes, and animation to do it all by hand.

Considering the massive dialogue trees and she volume of speech, I’d say it’s simply more than cutting corners, I think it’s a practical approach.

That’s the Civ series for most people I think. I still prefer IV over V.
