I see "Best anime for beginners" lists all the time that leave Bebop and Champloo out, and I can't fathom why that is - both (Bebop more than Champloo by a hair) are great stories first and great anime second, a problem all the stuff on this particular list has - they're all ANIME and little else.

Same. I believe this is the most Western of animes out there (both Western as the genre and Western as in Western Civilization). In fact, I am pretty sure that between the jazz theme and Spikes individualism that it is deliberately an American show.
