With AOKP ROM (and others I'm sure) you can simply put your phone face down and it will automatically switch from whatever its set on to silent. its pretty handy actually.

AOKP not only has the option but allows you to assign your own colors to different notifications.

There is not a stable release, but there is a pretty decent build out on XDA right now, I have it on my TP and it functions enough that I can use it as my daily driver with very few issues.

to be fair most reviews are for the RT version, which is basically the entry level version and not the full fledged system. the Pro version that can run legacy apps may be much better.
