It both pains and amazes me to read these articles David. Iffn you can’t get the DJ up and running in time for MOAB I have a clapped out 3rd gen 4runner you are welcome to take (with the caveat that you’ll zip tie repair anything you break on the way there / there / back). 

Yes, that’s the grey market shady way I was referring to. There are entire companies dedicated to you “selling” them your car using a bill of sale, them getting a title in VT and then “selling” it back to you. Checked with NYS Troopers and it’s not strictly legal or illegal. Sigh. 

It’s not the engine that’s the deal breaker, it’s the lack of title or reggy. I’ve tried getting an old car (72 Nova) titled and registered in my home state (NY) and it’s a nightmare if not impossible to do it legally, and expensive and shady to do it grey market. At best this is an overpriced parts car :(

I used to run the shell Rotella diesel specific dino oil in the Nova which had a flat tappet cam. A few years back there were some restrictions in zinc content for “regular” motor oils, however stuff labeled for diesel use got to keep the higher zinc content. Or something. Made me feel better about it anyways.
