This is a little disingenuous. Credit unions are fine, but alternatively you could join an online bank that has minimal-to-no fees for core accounts. Additionally, there are such things as privately-owned banks, not every institution is at the beck and call of Wall Street.

Is your bank primarily online-based? Digital banks like Ally (of which I am a customer, full disclosure) typically offer the most competitive rates on savings accounts, CD’s, etc. And most will either waive or reimburse ATM fees, up to a certain amount per cycle (Ally is 10 per month, I believe).
