Ask any woman who has eventually been diagnosed with a very real and not at all imaginary disease or health condition how many times they’ve been told it was actually anxiety/depression. Or ask a mother who has concerns for their child’s health…

I’ve always thought that autism was just easier to “pass” with as a girl. Boys are supposed to be loud, boisterous, wild etc. Girls are quite, restrained, proper.

As a man (but not a scientist or mathmatologist by any measure) learning that our history of medical research has consistently, and what appears to be agressively, failed to include a statistically significant number of women (if at all) is baffling to me.

This is not surprising at all. Medical diagnosis always use men as the default. I remember as recently as the 90s hearing people insist that women don’t have heart attacks. Of course we do, but our symptoms don’t look like Fred Sanford clutching his chest and calling out to his dead wife, so they were dismissed.

This is also true of ADD, which tends to manifest itself differently in girls than boys.
