Yeah, I am confused by this as well. Since it wasn’t a crash, why would anyone slow down because someone’s bike is broken? I assume the durability of the bike factors into the racing.
One of cycling’s “unwritten rules” is that you don’t attack the yellow jersey when they have a mechanical issue, but this rule has become much more open to interpretation and debate in the past decade.
Chris Froome had a mechanical issue, and Aru went past him right as he was signaling for help. Debates over the ethics of attacking while rivals are in trouble are often murky and inconclusive; this one was not
