Good catch, I have no idea why I'd lumped Hawke into the "Best Actor" category somehow. (I loved Boyhood by the way, just didn't think the acting was a particular triumph — but I'll acknowledge that Arquette probably deserves to be on that list.) You can replace Hawke with Cumberbatch or Carrell — I liked both of

The bad: LEGO Movie not even getting a nod for best animated picture, the general love for non-Eddie-Redmayne aspects of Theory of Everything, Ethan Hawke beating out Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, the entire supporting actress category except Emma Stone (Kiera Knightley and Meryl Streep?! Meryl Streep, the hammy

In addition to the ones you mentioned (which are shoe-ins — my bet is "trivial complaints" could revolve around any number of "____ Education/Training Day" Office episodes), I think it depends on how they define "Sitcom." I wouldn't be surprised if Futurama or even (gasp, it's not cool anymore) Family Guy got a

The fact that Calvary is getting pretty much zero attention makes me very sad

Braile, Benny and the Jorts, King Cod feat. Anchovi-lla, Habeus Corpses, Run n' Tell That, Frankly My Deer, Fahrenheit 420, Flacccid, The Eddie Veterans, Flank Steak, Dry Rub, Mardie Foie Gras, clearly I'm getting hungry so time to quit while I'm ahead…

Not that I disagree too fervently with the nominations, but with the exception of Birdman and Boyhood, none of these films did anything particularly ambituous (even hinting that Unbroken should have gotten a nod makes me die a little inside.) Whiplash was absolutely breathtaking, and it's incredible to me that the

It will be depressing, indeed, if the song I wind up having to root for is the nice-but-totally-vanilla "Lost Stars" from Begin Again, just because it had some semblance of sincerity (while remaining indistinguishable from the "corporate pop" the movie tried to trash.) Shame if that's the most the Academy can offer.

Was there an exact reason "I Love You All" didn't make the list, or is this only mentioning songs that have passed some initial voting phase? I (and pretty much everyone else who saw Frank) loved that song — not just indiephiles either, but paid film critics like those on Chicago's Filmspotting. It seems absurd to not

I found this very amusing once I caught wind of the snark (i.e. a few seconds after opening it.) Sean's crack about Madden being in suspended animation made me audibly snort. Haters will hate, I suppose.

"news circulated of a second collaboration between writer-director Noah Baumbach and actress-writer Greta Gerwig"

I thought it was hugely pleasant the whole way through. I loved Frank and Whiplash as much as the next guy, and totally get the criticism that Kiera Knightly's "real art" was indistinguishable from pop music. But as far as charming movies go, Begin Again was one of my favorites this year. It had so much heart in it.

I'll have to check it out. The themes of Lucy could have been great — I'm actually a grad student in Artificial Intelligence so I dig things that try to address the hardware of the brain. It's the execution that killed it.

I have no idea why anyone would go to bat for Lucy*. Such a godawful film, whose only saving grace was the director's name. Without the ridiculous benefit of the doubt it's afforded (it was supposed to be bad! the dialogue was supposed to be stilted!) I can't imagine it getting so much critical acclaim.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see this is getting a very positive reception. The trailers I've been seeing in theatres have made this look like a bland, sappy period piece. It's good to know there's some life in it.

This is insanity

Very much agree with Dowd's Whiplash and Foxcatcher scenes. Amazing.

Saving Christmas was probably my favorite viewing experience of the year. Which in no way should detract from how deserving it is of this list.

Your comment made me go back and check it out. Jesus, what an album. I'm a diehard Songs: Ohia fan, and "JM" floored me.

I can't believe how many chapters of that I read.

Totally disagree about HIMYM being placed in worst endings. Maybe "most disappointing ending" if you're just tallying individual responses, but I thought it was ballsy and true. Granted, it could have used more time to make the transition less jarring (Radnor's interview on the How I Met Your Mother podcast suggests
