Even if legal, it should be fairly widely recognized as a terrible practice. People that have been limited to 6 hours of sleep a night for two weeks are just as fatigued as those who have been awake for 48 hours straight. You just stop getting productivity at some point.

No one forced Tesla to make cars. If they don’t like the bad press from their dangerous and inhumane working conditions, they could build another product or improve conditions. Stop whining, no one forced you to have such lax safety standards.
