If I had to paint with a broad brush and pick just one reason, I’d chalk the BMW depreciation up to meh styling in the 2010s. I look at the current non-M 3s and 5s and fall asleep.
The biggest reason why the 5 series is hit so hard is because all of the engines BMW puts into them are white-hot garbage. At the lower end of the totem pole you’ve got the wheezy N20 4-banger, with its wondrous failing vacuum pumps (so you lose brake assist *and* burn oil), rod bearing issues, and timing chain issues…
