Lists! Whee!

Its always been my view that concertos are the Everests of piano pieces, although there are plenty of solo and other works that could challenge the claim for most difficult.  But the combination of a full symphony together with a grand piano is just so much more powerful and dramatic.. at least for me.

Small trivia tidbit.. he also performed the Rachmaninov 3rd concerto, the one later made famous by the Australian movie "Shine", starring Geoffrey Rush in, I think, his first film.  That piece was equally, if not more difficult than the Tchaikovsky, although that is always debatable.  He also recorded that concert

In my mind, the original Hallowe'en fits this category, although not sure what its rating was.  Full of suspense, and that awesomely creepy score.. but no gore until the end, if that counts, and it really wasn't that explicit.  Every one after that went to the gore route, but none of them were better than the

I saw this film in September at the Calgary International Film Festival… it really is hard to watch, and unmistakeably a Haneke work.  That being said, it would be no surprise to win best picture, and deservedly so…. however, the lack of car chases or rockin' soundtrack might hurt its chances..
