Is it just me, or is some of this actually impressive? Sure, much of the visuals are sub-par at best, but some things, especially the explosions, actually look oddly real.

I've found the exact opposite. It really depends on the channel. Some are mainstream, some will lame you just BECAUSE something you play is mainstream. There's really a nice mix, you just have to try a different room or create your own. And don't be afraid to use the description...
