It can also be managed in software.  Tesla’s will put themselves in park if you do something dumb (like open the door and take your butt off the seat), unless you had put it in neutral (which takes a fairly deliberate action).

We only know one side of the story here, but just based on these notifications, it’s pretty clear that this guy deserves to be punched in the throat.
