On PC there are no hoops. Just grab a 360 controller and you're good to go. On Mac it's a much more complicated issue. PS3 is recognized, but poorly supported. 360 is doable but requires much more configuration than I can imagine anyone wanting to get into.

What you are describing is the 360 controller. It's the standard (as long as you're on PC)

If you're on PC the 360 pad is a no brainer. If you're on mac get a PS3 controller.
