I know he’s busy making movies, teaching at NYU and all that other stuff, but I really wish Michael Showalter would release another standup album. I loved Sandwiches & Cats.
Ask Sweden, Norway & Denmark - they seem to be managing okay, balancing Democratic Socialism and Egalitarianism with Very Limited Constitutional Monarchies (their Kings have to pay taxes, same as everybody else).
So like retro-white stereotypes created by black people?
Can an article exist on AVClub without Prince Ruprecht the Monkey Boy performing his social progressiveness all over the comments?
This turns unwatchable into messy, at least.
I wouldn’t start with Word - it’s really good but it is about the failure of communication while most of her books are about the necessity and difficulty of communicating. It is extremely angry, written as a clear Vietnam allegory, and an outlier compared to the other LeGuin I’ve read.
No work of fiction has so clearly divided my life into “before” and “after” as “The Left Hand of Darkness” did in seventh grade. Farewell to one of the all time greats.
Damn. I only started reading her about four or five years ago, even though I am a fairly prolific sci-fi/fantasy reader, and she quickly became one of my favorite authors. Have no idea why it took me so long.
Religulous is a 2008 movie, you weren’t watching it 15 years ago.
Well the nativity story has been picked to pieces already as is, but as many have pointed out, the man didn’t exactly have a unique name. He was basically a wandering vagrant who enjoyed a fringe notoriety for a couple years before being executed. It was the apostles who made him a legend but to the Romans who killed…
Once again, there’s a difference between believing what was preached, and believing in the preacher. These are people who, I cannot stress this enough, WOULD HAVE BEEN ALIVE AT THE SAME TIME AS JESUS AND THE APOSTLES. While it’s true you can get people to believe anything, someone had to get the ball rolling.
“Adventures of Tin Tin style” - damn it! His name is “Tintin” - one word, one name, one capitalized letter, no last name, and no damn space in between! Why is this so hard for so many people?!
Twenty years after the fact.
...except for the Roman census that was the whole reason for why Mary and Old Joe* were on the road in need of a manger.
Independent records? This is 2000 years ago. They weren’t that fastidious. Papyrus was expensive. You couldn’t run down to the Caeseria Office Max in order to write down the name of every Jewish troublemaker you had to string up on a tree. What evidence are you hoping for besides that of the people for whom Christ was…
Thomas Edison sure as hell didn’t do all the things we tend to credit to him. Maybe he never really existed either?
You are completely wrong about non-Christian sources. Josephus’s history contains references to Jesus. There are multiple non-canonical stories of Jesus. The Canonical Gospels are historical texts themselves. The fact that all of the original Apostles but one were martyred suggests they believe Jesus was a historical…
Tacitus’ reference to Jesus is actually not thought to be a forgery - it’s widely believed to be authentic. It’s only Josephus’ that historians have doubts about.
Also, it can be argued that the existence of an established cult of worshippers a mere 30 years after his presumed death already gives indication that he…
You consider getting drunk driving to someone's house and threatening them with a broken bottle a justifiable response to them having an affair with your spouse?
