OK, that’s fair. But the director, himself Chinese, stated quite clearly that Damon is but one of FIVE heroes (saviors). The other four are Chinese.

“One could argue that writing a role for a white man doesn’t take a role from an Asian actor the way literally changing a character’s race does, but it’s still just another role marked for a white actor.”
I’m far more disturbed by the people being so dismissive of the greatest living Chinese filmmaker (a man whose 20s were spent as a victim of the Cultural Revolution) wanting to make a crossover hit.
My question is are the people calling this whitewashing the same ones defending the black Santa Claus situation from yesterday. Can’t have your cake and eat it too. If I (rightly) defend the whole Black Santa situation from yesterday then how does one complain and bitch about this today? This isn’t even a true story,…
Uhh, this just seems like saying “white people can’t be in movies with Chinese people”. The Chinese director who made this Chinese film wrote the role for a white actor.
This is even worse than when no Isla Nublareans were cast in Jurassic Park.
Movie is made with Chinese money for Chinese market by a Chinese director. Yet a white American feels sufficiently entitled to critique a movie she hasn’t watched.
So a Chinese director casts five leading characters, one of whom is white rather than Asian. The other four are Chinese.
I have to say, as much as I’m not a huge Matt Damon on diversity fan, I trust Zhang Yimou on this one.
I don’t want to Northsplain to you, Anna, but you have to rent a snowmobile.
This seems like something Matt Barnes would do.
Matt,
Do you defend every QB benched or only ones that “speak out against racism”?
I think Chip Kelly is a dumbass and all, but it really necessary to “explain” why you benched a QB who, though three quarters, was 1-5 for 4 yards and a QB rating of 3.2?
They’ll eventually turn into the Gizmodo network, then.

Protest away, but end of the day if you want the college to be a certain way those protests should translate into dollars from your checking account or time spent brown-nosing for money from the endowment donor class, because the model simply isn’t sustainable as it sits right now for most of these colleges.
Funny, how single sex anything turns into a mission, if only the ‘right’ sex is at the center of the mission, otherwise it’s called discrimination.
