I think the cowboy relates well to the modern story. This week there was a nice thematic connection to Jesse. Both rather half-assedly tried to do the right thing & fucked it up. Both inadvertently made things worse for others and themselves.

Spielberg does indeed have a talent for blending real & visual effects, either practical or CGI. But CRYSTAL SKULL demonstrated that even he can utterly suck at it from time to time. The bad CRYSTAL SKULL was made worse by some truly awful CGI, especially in the jungle sequences.
