It’s not that the horror stories are contrived, but rather reliability is not determined by sampling a single vehicle.

If I lived up there, or drove up in the winters frequently, I would have snow tires. However I have driven over mountain passes in the snow on all season tires many times. The only time I ever had any trouble was in the middle of a blizzard.
