What was the process behind it? Is it the actual level without textures and shaders, and without lights (and probably another rendering)? Or is it an image manipulation of a screenshot?

That's because of the cost of developing a AAA game today. Big companies can't afford to throw this much money on projects that don't talk to everybody or that are not commercially viable. Fortunately, we've got smaller studio and indies that are doing great creative stuff nowadays!

I miss 2D RPGs with this kind of high quality pixel art illustrations. Frankly I would prefer if pokemon stayed 2D and had that kind of sprites for the pokemons.

I would love to see a bit more 2D RPGs on not-so-powerful consoles like the 3DS instead of very low poly 3D games.
